    New Liskeard CBC

Greetings all. This year's New Liskeard / Haileybury CBC is scheduled for this Monday, December 14.  Traditionally, we meet at McDonalds at around 8:30 a.m. (some of us are having breakfast there).  Anyone interested in spending a day "in the field" can join us (though "on the road" might be a more applicable phrase for most of the day). Bring binoculars if you have them, and a field guide too if you have one, even if you are familiar with most of our typical winter birds. You never know when something unusual might show up. New and beginning birders will be paired with more experienced birders, so its a great chance for beginners to learn in a fun and scientifically valuable way on this one-day census of the birds of the area. The weather forecast at this point is for a very mild day - around 0, with very light flurries that won't amount to much.  We'll have lots of open water on Lake Timiskaming too.... maybe even too much as the birds won't be concentrated. See you there!

    New Liskeard CBC

Well, I have now updated the CBC results for all three Timiskaming counts. As I was working through the data, I noticed that Townsend's Solitaire was not our only new species to the Haileybury count circle this year. We also picked up Lesser Scaup and Red-breasted Merganser for the first time due to the presence of so much open water.  Also worthy of note is that our effort, measured as number of party hours, is the highest it's been since 2001. Thanks for all your help, folks.

You will note that I have split up the CBC results so that each count circle now has its own page.  What may not be so obvious is that I have added a row for the total numbers of individual birds seen to all three count circles. I've also added links to maps for the Mountain Chutes and Hilliardton counts. A map for the Haileybury count will be forthcoming soon.  Species are listed for each count in taxanomic order.
