Just observed a Black-backed Woodpecker in my back yard in Henwood Twp. in a small Jack Pine tree. I heard a soft pecking, and almost didn't bother to check it out, since there are many chickadees and several nuthatches around grabbing sunflower seeds from the feeder and then flying off to the nearby trees to peck them open. We also have three Hairy Woodpeckers around. It seemed to be going on a bit too long to be a chickadee or nuthatch though, so I thought I might as well go investigate. I watched it for a few minutes to make certain of the id, then went to get my camera. Sure enough, after getting my camera the bird was not to be found. I'll definitely keep my ears open for soft pecking sounds around the yard for the next few days though. If it reappears. I'll let you all know and try to keep my camera a little more handy.
