    pine siskins Gillies lake

Alex barkhouse took the first pine siskin of 2010 out of a net as I had the chance to band with Alex and his mom today for about an hour of banders training in addition to the 2 we banded there were a number of other pine siskins that were singing a flitting about the feeders after banding finished. We also managed to catch and band a pine grosbeak and several previously banded chickadees were retrapped. Almost forgot we banded a couple of goldfinches as well. Happy birding i heard that flocks of grackles and redwings are being seen in the south. I kniow we are still over a month away but i have the fever!!!

I believe your fever is being induced by unseasonably mild temperatures that are closer to what we'ed expect at the end of March. Take two aspirins, drink plenty of fluids, and go sit in your freezer wearing only a T-shirt and shorts for awhile.

F.Y.I. Lionel Venne of Elk Lake reports a few siskins as well as a flock of Redpolls at his feeder in Elk Lake this past week.  My Pine Grosbeak flock in Kenabeek continues to grow, but no other finches other than goldfinches are present in Kenabeek.
