    GREAT GRAY OWL

A couple of friends of mine that live on the Eby Pothole road in Eby Township have been reporting a "large owl" around their property since March. Although they have seen it several times, they are not birders and couldn't give me a good enough description for a positive ID. I meant to go out and play the owl survey call but never got around to it. They are only about 1 km from where the Hawk Owl was hanging around last winter on Highway 66 so I was concerned that their idea of "large" might be inaccurate. Reg Brand stopped by this afternoon, however, and reported seeing a Great Gray just down the road from my friends place. Reg knows his birds so I trust his call.

Mike, can you give me a date for the sighting?

Reg was on his way out of town tonight so I will have to wait a couple of days to get that but I think it was yesterday. Will confirm.

Got hold of Reg this evening and he confirmed the owl sighting as June 7.

Mostly quiet on the northern front lately. A dozen siskins have been inhaling the niger seed along with a few goldfinches. I took a peek at the Kirkland Lake basin today on my way home: raven, geese, gulls, loon, swallows too far away to ID and about a dozen shorebirds, also too far away to ID. Lots of blacks and mallards at tha park in Swastika - they have been joined by a white pigeon for about two weeks now. It has "joined the flock", feeding and napping with the ducks on the lawn. It must be lonely.
