    CBC Christmas Bird Count Dates

I haven't been very active on the forums of late, but should be able to start participating more soon.

To summarize and clarify dates for the three Christmas Bird Counts:
New Liskeard - Saturday, December 18th
        Hilliardton - Sunday, December 19th
        Mountain Chutes/Elk Lake - Tuesday, December 28th

Please note that the date for the New Liskeard count published in the Speaker's Weekender is incorrect. For those wishing to participate in both the New Liskeard and Hilliardton Counts, you will be able to since the counts are on two different days. (Sorry about the confusion - faulty memory when Darlene Wroe called me to get the details.)

New Liskeard / Haileybury CBC on Saturday

Just a reminder to everyone that the New Liskeard CBC is this Saturday. We will be meeting at the McDonalds in New Liskeard at 9:00 am (sharp). Those who wish to come early can join us at McDonalds for a pre-meeting breakfast at 8:30 am (blunt).

    Hilliardton Christmas Bird Count

We meet Sunday December 19th at 9:00 AM at The Birdhouse at Hilliardton Marsh. Come prepared with binoculars, pen or pencil, warm clothes & boots, a clipboard, or hard book to serve as a writing surface. You may want to bring a lunch, as we are going to be out until at least 2:00 PM. Other items could be a bird ID book, note book etc. See you there!

Re: Elk Lake Christmas Bird Count

    Hi Mike,

Just heard that a cardinal ?  has been visiting a feeder on 4th ave. in Elk Lake at the Stockman home . She has been trying to get a picture.

Head towards the Legion building , turn right past the Community centre and go to the white house at the end of the road.

    Good Luck.

Re: Elk Lake Christmas Bird Count

Sorry all, for this late update on Tuesday's count - the last few days have been a bit hectic (as I'm sure they have been for all of you as well).  We meet at 9:00 am at the parish hall of Nativity Catholic Church on Rosedale, just left of the Elk Lake Museum (which was the old Catholic church in days gone by).

Bring a lunch, as there is nowhere in Elk Lake to grab a bite unless you're OK with junk food from the variety store.  See you all there.

Thanks for the heads up on the cardinal Gert.  We'll be sure to make a special effort to find it.

hi,  We just got back from Sudbury this afternoon. Hope you had luck in Elk Lake. We hardly saw any birds on the  hwy today. When we went to Sudbury on the 23rd. we saw hundreds of them especially on 560 W. to the 144 turn off.

    Did you find the cardinal?

Re: Elk Lake Christmas Bird Count

Sad to report no luck on confirming cardinals in the Elk Lake or Kenabeek areas, although count week includes up to and including Friday, so still a chance.  Best find on count day was a Northern Shrike - standing guard near a feeder in a fairly treed in area, being harshly scolded by a flock of chickadees, while three Blue Jays sat nearby making not a sound.  I'll have full results posted in the next day or two.
