    evening grosbeaks at gillies

just saw the first flock of evening grosbeaks in about 2 months there might have been as many as 20 in the flock mostly males. Just thought I would also mention last year that the firs redwinged blackbird we banded at the marsh was I believe march 20th. Don't think that will be happening this year. Enjoy the march break everyone I am off to the marsh with reed for the night to listen for sawwhets then we are heading south to watch the leafs fight their way into the playoffs. Better hope for the owls. Pish on!!!

    Re: evening grosbeaks at gillies

Speaking of arrivals - I had a White-breasted Nuthatch mixed in with the birds attracted to my feeder the other day.  It is a first at my feeder location, and as far as I know was only there for one day.  It didn't come to the feeder, but was in the vicinity due to the other bird activity.  The forest immediately surrounding my feeder location is strong to conifer, with very little deciduous in the canopy, so I usually get only Red-breasted Nuthatches.  Do this Nuthatch and your Evening Grosbeaks represent the first vanguards of the spring migration, or just the normal winter residents moving around a bit?
