    siskins, boreal chickadee

Saw our first pair if pine siskins at the feeder today in Swastika. Also saw a boreal chickadee at the feeders on the cross-country ski trail in KL this morning. Still getting lots of pine and evening grosbeaks in Swastika every day, along with the odd woodpecker (hairy, downy, pileated), jays, black capped chickadees.

These are the first siskins I've heard about this winter. All three of our Christmas Bird Counts were a bust on siskins this year.  That might be not so unusual though, as all three counts also missed siskins in 2004, 2007 and 2008. They seem to be more commonly a late winter visitor than an early winter one.  Maybe its already time to revive our "first sightings" thread for 2010.

Re: siskins, boreal chickadee - First Sightings Thread -

I can maintain it as I did last year. Set it up again for me. Note, though, that Siskins was not on our list last year, because our on-line list was set up as a partial list. I have been maintaining a separate spreadsheet, recording any and all of the now 270 birds on our list, as they are reported, starting fresh for 2010. Pine Siskin is now on that list, bringing it to 20 species so far.
