The "professor" has been doing a bit of reading lately. "Songbird Journeys" was written by a Cornell ornithology department staff member. Available from amazon.ca for less than $10. It has many interesting anecdotes and stories of migratory songbird studies, with tips on where to find birds during migration. It is more of a fun than a technical read. It also covers electronic monitoring of birds using radio transmitters and microphones. We will have our own microphone monitoring station by spring - more to come on this when it gets assembled. Check www.oldbird.org for info on acoustic monitoring. The MNR also has an acoustic monitoring project for species at risk in Ti(e)miskaming this year.
I also got a subscription to "Bird Watcher's Digest" for Christmas- an American publication with a few Canadian and international references. The stories are extremely well written and would be of interest to birders anywhere. The last issue has a story on bird art by Charley Harper - way cool.
No big changes at the feeders - 2 lonely siskins keepcoming around for a little niger snack every few days.
