    Some new faces...

Like Mike, I too have been slow to post lately. Busy, and computer woes, as well as most days seeming like same old, same old.  There have been a couple of new faces though...  Last Monday, May 10, I had just finished pitching onto the 5th green at New Liskeard Golf Club (well, okay, pitching over the green...I guess I have to be honest to preserve my integrity), and my buddy says "Look up!"  So I did, and watched an Osprey drift over towards the northwest, checking out all the water traps.  He apparently didn't see any fish, but he may have seen lots of my golf balls.  I ran for the golf cart, as I have gotten into the habit of always carrying my camera, but my wife and I are engaged in an ongoing battle over which lens to keep on my camera.  She seems to be winning, and I got a couple of indistinct silhouette shots (which I then lost in aforesaid computer woes).  Today, Tom and I took a run to the cottage, and discovered that the Cliff Swallows are back at the Blanche River bridge on Wendigo Road in Evanturel Twp.  The nests are in disrepair compared to last year, but I'm sure they'll fix them up.  There are also some Tree Swallows in residence in the new fence boxes at the corner of Wendigo Rd. and Wendigo Lake Rd.

Aside from that, things have been fairly quiet.  Saw Sandhills as late as last Monday in Elk Lake, and the Broad-winged Hawk was at the entrance to the Charlton-Dack landfill on Hwy 560 two days last week.  We have watched the White-crowned Sparrows replace the Juncos who replaced the Tree Sparrows, although they seem to be moving on now as well.  More Purple and Gold finches, as well as Pine Siskins are being seen at my place.  My Red-breasted Nuthatches and Chickadees still faithfully visit, and I sometimes have Starlings, Grackles, White-throated and Chipping Sparrows, and the occasional Blue Jay, Crow, and even Raven.

Good luck in your Bird-a-thon tomorrow!  Tom is registered, but leaves for Toronto tomorrow, so will have to do it next weekend.
