    Englehart Lagoon 2010.07.20

Took a quick trip to the lagoon last evening just to check things out...Lots of Mallards and other ducks, Red-winged Blackbirds, Grackles, a pair of Ravens.  I also saw my first Nighthawk of the year, and I've been looking almost every evening.  In further, the light was not good, but there were Chickadees, Cedar Waxwing, American Redstart, and Yellow-rumped Warblers.  I also took photos of two that I need help with... the first has a distinctive white patch on the tail, but I couldn't find it in my field guides:

The other I believe to be some type of sparrow:

Funny how you just start thinking you've got a handle on some of these, and something new and unexpected pops up.  I suppose that's one of the reasons we keep looking!

Serge, would you like to go out and record the Bank Swallows some morning?

I'll take a guess:  first one might be a juvenile Yellow-rumped.  Second one has a pretty strong bill, almost no angle with the forehead, I'll go with juvenile Rose-breasted grosbeak.  I'll take a look in my books at home tonight.  Do I win something?

I guess the colors on my screen at work are not very accurate.  If I have a second chance, I'll go with Song sparrow on the lower picture..

Re bank swallows - Sure Mark, give me a call tomorrow. Just came back from the cottage near Rouyn, and I too have some mystery birds, and will post them tomorrow after a good sleep.
