    Northern Cardinal in New Liskeard

Howdy all. This is my first visit to your site and I must say it's pretty neat. To call me a birder is to call a Maple Leaf a hockey player (yeah, I've met Murph on occasion), but I am interested in the little critters, so thought you might want to know that:

My family and I had the pelasure of wathcing a female cardinal at our feeder at 531 Agnes Ave. in New Liskeard on the morning of Sunday, January 13, 2008. The first time I wasn't quite sure that my eyes were seeing what I thought they were, but she came back several times so there was no doubt.

Does anyone know if safflower is available locally? I recall from my days in Carleton Place that feeding this stuff really keeps the cardinals around; this bird was hitting standard mixed feed with black oil sunflower, cracked corn and other mixed seeds.

We'll keep our eyes open for the male.

     Pete

Welcome to the forums, Pete. Thanks for your post.  I will add your sighting to the Cardinal species account page.  Good birding!

Re: Northern Cardinal in New Liskeard

there may be three cardinals in the area a male was seen as recently as yesterday in haileybury and a nd a male has been hanging around dawson point off and on. The haileybury bird could be the same one as the one in haileybury i will be cjecking on these sightings. The dawson point bird was seen during the newliskeard christams bird count day but not as yet reported to those doing the count so that is an exciting addition. So we have two cardinals for sure. How can we get these two cardinals together so we can have a permanent family. Pete i have a 50 lb bag of safflower get in touch and i will get you some. i have heard they love safflower but they also really liike sunflower. i bought the safflower on advice that the birds love it and the squirrels don't but I found that chickadees and pine grosbeaks apparently prefer black oil sunflower seed
